Following the 77 km Gotaleden Trail from Gothenburg to Alingsås, you'll walk through forests, lakeside landscapes, traditional Swedish countryside, and charming small towns. The route is technically easy, with well-maintained forest paths, gravel tracks, and some quiet road sections. Public transport options allow some stages to be shortened if needed.
Arrive in Gothenburg and settle into your centrally located hotel. Sweden's second-largest city offers a lively waterfront, excellent restaurants, beautiful parks and a relaxed Scandinavian atmosphere. Take time to explore the city and enjoy a nice dinner, maybe some fresh seafood for tonights dinner?
Challenge: Travel to Gothenburg
Leave your luggage at the hotel and start your hike. The first few kilometres are an easy walk through Gothenburg before reaching the vast Delsjön Nature Reserve, an area of forests and lakes that feels surprisingly wild so close to the city. The trail passes numerous small lakes and scenic picnic spots with great views over Gothenburg and the surrounding woodland. Continue via Kåsjön to Jonsered, a historic mill community where the beautiful Jonsered Gardens and café are well worth a visit. From here, the route follows the shores of Lake Aspen along hilly trails with wonderful views before easier paths lead into Aspenäs.
Challenge: 29.5 km / 18 mi, approx. 7-8 h, 442 m ascent
Shorter tour: 24.5 km / 15.2 mi, approx. 6-7 h, +330 m ascent (using local transport to skip the first section)
Villages along the way: Delsjön, Kåsjön, Jonsered, Aspenäs
Start the day with easy walking into Lerum. From here, the Gotaleden follows the beautiful Säveån River, passing Stenkullen before entering the Säveån Nature Reserve, where several kilometres of delightful forest walking await. There are plenty of pleasant places for a picnic along the river, although many walkers prefer to stop at the popular Garveriet in Floda, a former tannery transformed into a café and restaurant. The final section is an easy walk to Nääs Fabriker in Tollered. Enjoy this exceptional lakeside hotel, perhaps with a sauna, a swim in the lake or a relaxing evening overlooking the water.
Challenge: 21 km / 13 mi, approx. 5-6 h, 257 m ascent
Villages along the way: Lerum, Stenkullen, Floda, Tollered
Leaving Tollered, walk uphill through forests and open meadows before reaching the sheep farm of Mysten. Continue through attractive conifer woodlands towards Ingared. Much of the second half of the day follows gravel roads and quiet lanes, offering lovely views of the elegant turn-of-the-century villas overlooking Lake Mjörn. Shortly before reaching your destination, pass through Nolhaga Park and admire Nolhaga Castle. Your journey along the Gotaleden ends in the charming town of Alingsås, famous throughout Sweden for its cafés and welcoming atmosphere.
Challenge: 26 km / 16 mi, approx. 6-7 h, 310 m ascent
Villages along the way: Mysten, Ingared, Nolhaga, Alingsås
After breakfast, your Gotaleden walking holiday comes to an end. Frequent trains connect Alingsås with Gothenburg in approximately 25 minutes.

For this tour, we have selected a combination of comfortable city hotels, ideally located for exploring the city, and two welcoming accommodations set in a historic manor house and a restored textile factory. All have been chosen for their atmosphere, quality of service and suitability for this journey.
If a listed accommodation is unavailable, a similar alternative will be booked and communicated to you. Extra nights can be booked at any of the accommodations along the route.
How do I get to Gothenburg?
The tour starts in Gothenburg, Sweden's second-largest city and one of the country's main transport hubs. Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is located approximately 20 km southeast of the city centre and offers numerous domestic and international connections. Regular airport buses connect the airport with Gothenburg Central Station.
You can also reach Gothenburg easily by train from other parts of Sweden and neighbouring countries.
From Copenhagen Airport, frequent train services connect to Gothenburg in approximately 4 to 4.5 hours.
From Stockholm, direct trains take between 3 and 5 hours depending on the service.
Airport transfers can be arranged on request.
Departure from Alingsås
At the end of the tour, frequent trains connect Alingsås with Gothenburg in approximately 25 minutes, making onward travel simple and convenient.
Where is the Gotaleden Trail?
The Gotaleden Trail is located in West Sweden, connecting Gothenburg with the historic town of Alingsås. The trail passes through forests, lakeside landscapes, river valleys, nature reserves and traditional industrial settlements, offering an excellent introduction to the Swedish countryside just beyond the city.
When to go?
The walking season runs from April to October, when temperatures are generally mild and the forests and lakes of West Sweden are at their most beautiful. Spring brings fresh greenery and long daylight hours, while summer offers warm temperatures perfect for hiking and swimming. Early autumn is often particularly attractive, with colourful forests and fewer visitors on the trails.
Tip: Swedish summer days are remarkably long. Between June and early August, daylight extends well into the evening, giving you plenty of time to complete your walks at a relaxed pace.

The trail is technically straightforward and follows a combination of forest paths, gravel roads, lakeside trails and short stretches of asphalt. Daily distances are relatively long, ranging from approximately 21 to 30 km, making the tour most suitable for walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. No technical hiking experience is required and the route is clearly waymarked throughout. Public transport options on some stages provide opportunities to shorten the daily walks if desired.

Depending on the season, you may find locally produced honey, artisan cheeses, wild berries and mushrooms. The forests surrounding the trail are well known for their abundance of blueberries, lingonberries and mushrooms, which often feature on local menus. A particular highlight is Garveriet in Floda, a popular food destination known for its bakery and locally sourced cuisine.
Yes. One of the pleasures of walking the Gotaleden is the abundance of lakes along the route. On warm days, there are several opportunities to enjoy a refreshing swim, particularly around the lakes in the Delsjön Nature Reserve and at Nääs Fabriker, where guests can also enjoy the lakeside sauna.
