Day 1:    Arrival in La Fresneda

Arrive in La Fresneda, one of Aragón’s prettiest villages, with its cobbled streets, elegant stone houses and charming Plaza Mayor. Surrounded by olive and almond groves, this historic village is the perfect introduction to the idyllic landscapes of the Matarraña.

Day 2:    From Calaceite to La Fresneda (19 km / 11.8 mi)

Start your first walk with a short transfer to Calaceite, then follow the Matarraña–Algars Nature Trail through olive groves, ancient terraces and small bridges back to La Fresneda. This tranquil stage combines beautiful farmland, river valleys and cultural heritage.

Challenge: 19 km, 6.5 h, 200 m ascent, 160 m descent

Day 3:    From La Fresneda to Valderrobres (13 km / 8 mi)

Walk through peaceful rolling farmland, olive orchards and small woods along the Matarraña River. As you approach Valderrobres, its medieval castle and Gothic bridge come into view — a spectacular end to the day. Enjoy a stroll through one of Spain’s most beautiful historic towns.

Challenge: 13 km, 4.5 h, 130 m ascent, 200 m descent

Day 4:    From Valderrobres to Beceite (7 - 14.5 km / 4.4 - 9 mi)

Discover the peaceful countryside around Valderrobres on a circular walk through orchards, fields and patches of woodland. The route follows quiet rural tracks, offering wide views over the surrounding hills and the silhouette of the castle. A relaxed day that allows time to explore Beceite’s medieval streets and enjoy its cafés and terraces.

Challenge: 14.5 km, 5 h, 512 m ascent, 450 m descent OR 7 km, 2.5 h, 150 m ascent, 100 m descent

Day 5:    Walks around Beceite (9 - 11 - 17 km / 5.7 - 7 - 10.8 mi)

Follow the valley of the Matarraña River towards the charming village of Beceite. The path runs through olive groves and farmland, then enters shady riverside woodland with beautiful natural pools where you can swim on warm days. Approaching Beceite, the landscape becomes rockier, with striking limestone formations and views towards the Els Ports Natural Park.

Challenge: 9 km, 3 h, 660 m ascent/descent OR 11 km, 4 h, 570 m ascent/descent OR 17 km, 5.5 h, 580 m ascent/descent

Villages along the way: Valderrobres, Beceite

Day 6:    From Beceite to Arnes (15 km / 9.5 mi)

A spectacular day in nature: follow a well-marked path through the Parrizal gorge, one of the most beautiful spots in Aragón. Wooden walkways lead between towering limestone walls and turquoise waters, home to rare plants and birds. Walk to Arnes along rural tracks. In the afternoon, you can visit the vulture observatory at Mas de Bunyol (optional, advance booking needed).

Challenge: 15 km, 4.5 h, 180 m ascent, 280 m descent

Villages along the way: Beceite

Day 7:    Circular walk from Arnes to Els Estrets (13 - 16.2 km / 8 - 10 mi)

Explore the wild landscapes of Els Ports Natural Park on a loop walk from Arnes. The route climbs gently through pine forest and rocky outcrops to reach panoramic viewpoints over the mountains and valleys. Vultures often circle overhead. This is the most “mountainous” day of the trip, offering a real sense of wilderness before returning to Arnes for your final night.

Challenge: 15 km, 5 h, moderate with some ascent

Day 8:    End of programme

Your walking holiday in the Matarraña comes to an end. After breakfast, depart from Arnes or extend your stay to relax and explore more of this enchanting region.

You can start on any day of the week, subject to availability, between the beginning of April and the end of October.

The nearest airports to the Matarraña region are the small airport of Reus (REU), Barcelona (BCN) and Zaragoza (ZAZ).

Arrive in La Fresneda

From the Barcelona and Reus airports there are regular bus and train connections to nearby towns such as Tortosa, Alcañiz or Valderrobres, from where you can take a taxi to La Fresneda.

From Barcelona or Reus: Take a train to Tortosa (approx. 2–3 h from Barcelona, 1 h from Reus). From Tortosa station, take a HIFE bus to Valderrobres (approx. 1 h 45 min). From Valderrobres, there is a local bus to La Fresneda, operated by the same company (limited departures, usually once a day on weekdays).

From Zaragoza: Take a HIFE bus to Alcañiz (approx. 3 h). From Alcañiz, continue by local HIFE bus to La Fresneda (approx. 40 min).

Train timetables can be consulted at www.renfe.com. Bus timetables can be consulted at www.alsa.es or www.hife.es.

Taxi transfers can be arranged in advance through S-Cape Travel.

 

Departure from Arnes

From Arnes, there is a local HIFE bus to Tortosa (approx. 2 h). From Tortosa, you can continue by train or bus to Barcelona or Reus. You can also travel from Arnes to Alcañiz by bus, then continue by bus to Zaragoza (approx. 3 h from Alcañiz).

Airport transfers on arrival and/or departure can be arranged through S-Cape Travel.
