Day 1: Arrival in Llanes
Day 2: From Buelna, Pendueles or Puertas back to Llanes (11 - 17 km / 7 - 10.5 mi)
Day 3: From Llanes (or Póo) to Nueva (19 km / 12 mi)
Day 4: Loop walk via Bufones de Pría (13 km / 8 mi)
Day 5: From Nueva to Ribadesella (12 - 16 km / 7.5 - 10 mi)
Day 6: From Ribadesella to Colunga (18 - 21,5 km / 11 - 13.5 mi)
Day 7: Loop walk from Colunga via La Griega (12 km / 7.5 mi)
Day 8: End of tour

Day 1:    Arrival in Llanes

Arrive at your hotel in the centre of Llanes, a historic port town on Spain’s Green Coast with easy access by public transport from the airport in Oviedo, Santander or Bilbao. If driving to Asturias, option of parking at the last accommodation in La Isla / Colunga then taking the bus back to Llanes.

Take an afternoon jaunt through medieval Llanes to 'Santa María del Conceyu', an excellent example of regional Gothic architecture second only to Oviedo Cathedral. Hit the shops, cafés, restaurants and cider bars for some local food and ‘sidra’. Try your hand at the unique pouring technique and taste the difference. Or have a chat with fishermen at the harbour. If sunny, soak up the 'sol' at two beaches right in the town!

Day 2:    From Buelna, Pendueles or Puertas back to Llanes (11 - 17 km / 7 - 10.5 mi)

Choose your distance for today and have the taxi driver drop you off in either Vidiago, Pendueles or Buelna, three villages on the E-9 coastal hiking path. Winding among green pastures, limestone cliffs and quiet coves, you’ll share the route with pilgrims from all over the world on their way to Santiago. This is one of the oldest variants of St James’ Way, the Northern Way or Camino del Norte. If you like, pause to share a bit more with your fellow travellers, like a beer or meal at the village café in Pendueles or Andrín, plus an interesting story or two!

Challenge: min 11 km / 7 mi (from Vidiago) / max 17 km / 10.5 mi (from Buelna), 4 / 6 hrs, 360 / 490 m ascent, 400 / 530 m descent

Villages along the way: Pendueles, Andrín

Day 3:    From Llanes (or Póo) to Nueva (19 km / 12 mi)

Start off from your hotel in Llanes to walk 19 km / 12 mi on the Camino del Norte, adding an extra 2 km to stop by the famous inland beach and Natural Monument 'Gulpiyuri'. But don’t let today’s distance scare you off! This is a very entertaining route with plenty of beaches and villages to pause for a drink, meal or paddle in the sea.

Optionally, you can order a taxi or take a public bus to shorten your walk and begin for example at Poo de Llanes, 3.5 km into the route.

When you reach Nueva de Llanes, you'll find your luggage at the hotel, a 19th-century colonial ‘Casa de Indianos’ decorated in period style.

Challenge: 19 km / 12 mi, 400 m ascent, 370 m descent, 5 hrs

Villages along the way: Póo, Celoriu, Barru, Niembru, Villahormes

Day 4:    Loop walk via Bufones de Pría (13 km / 8 mi)

If the weather calls for rough seas, you’ll be surprised by the powerful blowholes at Bufones de Llames de Pría… and risk getting soaked if you get too close! If the sea is calm, you’ll hear just a whisper (or growl) between the rocks, evoking some mythological creature ready to attack!

Traipse along fishermen's trails to the rivermouth at Guadamía then trek onward to Playa Cuevas del Mar, famous backdrop for many Spanish films. Stop for a break at the chill-out beach bar, but don’t linger too long. If you’re seduced to stay until sunset, you can order a taxi and skip the last 3 km back to Nueva.

In the morning you will take a public bus or taxi to the start of the walk in Belmonte, 3.5 km from Nueva. Your hotel can help arrange this.

Challenge: 13 km / 8 mi, 330 m ascent and descent, 4 hrs

Villages along the way: Llames de Pria

Day 5:    From Nueva to Ribadesella (12 - 16 km / 7.5 - 10 mi)

Here’s your chance to verify that this is indeed the most spectacular section of the Asturian Coast as you hike from the rivermouth at Guadamía to the port in Ribadesella. A series of limestone sculptures and string of islands and peninsulas will have you whipping out your camera again and again. In wet or windy weather, stick to the inland route on the Northern Way, traversing a friendly rural area dotted with tiny hamlets.

This evening, select a cider bar or restaurant in Ribadesella’s historic town centre. Perhaps the Michelin star Restaurante Arbidel (be sure to book online in advance). The preferred summer residence of Spanish nobility way back in the 17th century, Ribadesella is the cradle of local tourism and home to impressive Palaolithic cave art. If you don’t manage to get tickets for Tito Bustillo cave, do peek in at the interesting replicas in the excellent Museum next door.

Challenge: 12 - 16 km / 7.5 - 10 mi , 270 / 500 m ascent, 320 / 550 m descent, 4 / 5.5 hrs

Villages along the way: Cuerres

Day 6:    From Ribadesella to Colunga (18 - 21,5 km / 11 - 13.5 mi)

The Northern Saint James Way hugs the coastline today, passing eight (!) sandy beaches. You will have to endure 1 km on the old N-632 national road, though with little traffic, and this you will soon forget with lovely long sections on the beach at Arenal de Moris, Espasa and the magical La Isla. At the end of the day you turn your back to the coast to follow the Camino for a few more km inland, to the cozy boutique hotel in the centre of Colunga.

If you find 21.5 km too much for one day or are seduced by the waves and want to spend more time at a beach, you can always take a taxi or bus to shorten the route from Berbes, La Espasa or La isla.

Challenge: 18 - 21,5 km / 11 / 13.5 mi, 450 / 570 m ascent and descent, 5.5 / 6.5 hrs

Villages along the way: San Pedro, Vega, Berbes, La Isla

Day 7:    Loop walk from Colunga via La Griega (12 km / 7.5 mi)

Ever realised how truly enormous a dinosaur footprint can be? Witness it with your own eyes at La Griega Beach, where Jurassic tracks are immortalized in petrified mud. Follow in their footsteps on the last walk of the trip, which in itself is a compilation of the paths you’ve taken throughout the week: muddy dirt tracks, tarmac lanes, ancient cobbled cart trails and lots of fishermen's paths. At the end of the day, snap a mental picture of the perfect coastline near La Isla and fix it on your retina for time to come.

Challenge: 12 km / 7.5 mi, 230 m in ascent and descent, 4 hrs

Villages along the way: Huerres

Day 8:    End of tour

After breakfast your walking tour comes to an end with either a short walk to the nearest bus stop or an optional taxi transfer back to Llanes or the airport of your choice.

PRACTICAL INFO

How do I get to Llanes?

The nearest airports to fly to are Oviedo - Asturias (OVD)Santander (SDR) and Bilbao airport (BIO) and they are well communicated by bus. The bus company ALSA offers frequent services between these airports and Llanes.

It is also possible to get to Llanes by train using the FEVE railway line, which connects the cities of Santander (twice daily) and Oviedo (four times daily).

Departure from Colunga

At the end of the tour you either travel by bus from Colunga directly to Oviedo OR via Ribadesella back to Llanes if you have to return to Santander or Bilbao airport.

We can also arrange private transfers. If you have left your car in Llanes, we can also arrange a taxi transfer between Colunga and Llanes.

Where is Llanes?

Llanes is a beautiful fishing village, well known for its fishing past and present, and a popular summer destination for Spanish travellers. It lies on the Cantabrian coast, in the province of Asturias, in northern Spain, and serves as the main hub in the area with good public transport connections.

Tip: enjoy a dinner with fresh fish at one of the restaurants in the lonja, such as El Bálamu.

When to go?

The best time to visit the Llanes coast is between May and September, when the weather is warm, the days are longer, and the vibrant green of the landscape contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the sea. May, June and mid-September onwards are particularly good if you prefer fewer crowds. However, from mid-July to mid-August the area is very popular, and accommodation is often fully booked already by spring, so it’s best to plan ahead.

Car rental services are available at all main airports.

Travelling by car

The hotels do not have private car parks, hence you either leave it during the tour at a public car park in Llanes or (La Isla) Colunga. As there are not many restaurants close to the last hotel in La Isla (Colunga) during low season, we strongly recommend to park your car at the end of the tour in Colunga so that it's at your disposal during the last 2 days. There are bus stops in La Isla / Colunga form the company ALSA. You might have to change buses in Ribadesella during low season. We can also arrange a private taxi transfer between Colunga and Llanes.

Navigation app and tracks

Included in your booking is access to the tour on our navigation app. You can also download the tracks and follow the routes on your own device, but we recommend checking the app for the day-to-day itinerary

Weather & Climate

Month Temperature (ºC)   Hours of sunshine   Rain (%)

May 11–16 °C 7,5 h 39 %
Jun 14–19°C 8 h 33 %
Jul 16–20 °C 7,6 h 29 %

Sep 15–20 °C 7,8 h 33 %
Oct 13–18 °C 7,3 h 35 %

What gear do I need?

The routes follow paths and quiet country roads, so comfortable trainers are usually enough. However, keep in mind that Asturias is known for its green landscapes because of frequent rain, so it’s a good idea to bring two pairs of walking shoes and a rain jacket.

Most coastal paths run along cliffs above the sea with very little shade, so sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also important.

Although the routes pass through small villages, some have limited or no services, so on certain days you’ll need to carry snacks and water with you.

Difficulty & Terrain

The routes are easy, typically between 12 and 18 km (7.5–11 miles). They include gentle descents to beaches and climbs up to coastal cliffs, but ascents are gradual, with a maximum elevation gain of around 450 m over 18 km. Overall, the terrain is accessible and varied, combining coastal paths and quiet countryside tracks without any technical difficulty.

I enjoyed the accommodation Hotel Don Thomás in Nueva de Llanes. The route Ribadesella to Colunga I’ll loved the most.

I really liked Llanes and Ribedesella...wish there was more time in the later as it was only for a night. That was the first time that I did a solo hike of that nature. It can be a bit intimidating but after the first hour using the app I felt comfortable and confident. The lenght of the hike was about right as well. 8 days is the right lenght.

The level of difficulty was good and described well.

All the accommodations were very nice though we especially enjoyed Hotel La Figar. We so enjoyed this trip! It was truly a highlight of our whole vacation.

We loved the trip and the locations and the accomodations El Gran Paraíso in Llanes, don Tomas in Nueva and Mar del Sueve in Colunga: pleasant, beautiful, clean and comfortable and each of them very friendly hosts. The walks were sometimes a bit tough and long because of the heat in this extraordinary summer. It was helpful to know how we could shorten the trips to keep it doable. The app is great, it worked beautifully and we liked the information it provides.

FAQs

Yes, you can swim at the beaches. You can even stop at a beach along your walking route and take a dip, so don’t forget to bring your swimwear and a towel! The Cantabrian Sea can be a bit rough on some days, but there are beaches and small coves that are sheltered, where the sea is usually calm. Also, in this area there are tides, so you will notice that the sea level changes throughout the day.

Sure! For this tour, we recommend adding extra nights in Llanes or Ribadesella—two lively seaside villages with plenty of services and places to visit. If you prefer a quieter setting, you can add an extra night in Nueva, but note that the beach is 2,3 km (about 30 minutes) away on foot.

Your booking helps support the local economy in several ways:
