For this week, you will choose from a variety of walks and/or activities to enjoy summer pastures with stone barns, cool woods, high meadows with wild flowers, rushing streams and rocky areas with bizarre limestone formations. Included are 10 different hiking routes in the Picos, with different distances and degrees of difficulty, a canyonning activity (NOTE: this activity has age restrictions, it can be changed to a canoeing activity if children are smaller than 8 years old), and a visit to a dairy.

An exciting canyoning excursion is the plan for today. This activity is organized by local companies who are specialized in Active Tourism. They’ll provide you with the necessary instruction, as well as the gear you'll need. Activities are run by qualified guides. For families with children under 8 years old, there is an option of booking a canoeing activity along the Deva River.

Today, you have once again a range of routes to choose from, but remember: you can also organise on your own visit to a local dairy. The cheese dairy is localted in Sotres and you can book a guided visit (in Spanish) at 12:00, at 16:00 or at 18:00 hrs. The owners of "Quesería Maín" will show you alll about the process to make Cabrales cheese and will take you for a 10 minute walk to the cheese cave where the Cabrales cheese is left to age and mature. Last, but not least, there will be a tasting session of three different types of Asturian cheese, to finish this tasty experience!

Today you say farewell to the Picos after breakfast. Remeber to leave your guest house before 12 hrs.

We have chosen several traditional village houses (max. 8 people) located in some of the small towns in the Cabrales municipality. Depending on availability and capacity, one of them will be selected for you. On the list below you can see some examples. A travelling way that will allow you the freedom and independence of running your time-schedules as you choose and at the same time enjoying the tranquility of a rural and natural surrounding.

The nearest airports to the Picos de Europa are Oviedo - Asturias (OVD), Santander (SDR) and Bilbao (BIO).
Arrival in Arenas de Cabrales
This trip is programmed as self-drive arrangement and we recommend bringing your own car or renting a car at the nearest airport. If you're travelling by bus, it is possible to the area by public transport in combination with some extra taxi-transfers.
From the airports there are good bus connections to city centre bus stations, where you can catch a connecting bus to your destination (ALSA bus company, see time tables at www.alsa.es).
From Oviedo centre there are direct buses to Arenas de Cabrales, though these services cannot be booked in advance. From Santander and Bilbao, you take a direct bus to Unquera and then continue by taxi to Arenas de Cabrales.
NOTE: It is wise to book your bus tickets and taxi transfer in advance, especially for arrivals and when travelling in summer or on Friday afternoons. You can buy your bus tickets through the ALSA website www.alsa.es or through your S-cape office in Spain, also responsible for booking your taxi from Unquera to Arenas.
Departure from Arenas de Cabrales
At the end of your trip, the return journey is by the same route. Our S-Cape office in Arenas de Cabrales can help you make the reservations.
