Day 1:    Arrival in Vienna

Welcome to Vienna, Austria’s elegant capital and the starting point of your cycling adventure. After checking in and receiving your travel documents, take time to explore the historic city centre or relax at a traditional Viennese wine tavern. It’s the perfect introduction to the journey ahead.

Day 2:    from Vienna to Bad German Altenburg (40 km / 24.8 mi)

After collecting your bike and receiving a short tour briefing, begin your journey through the spectacular Danube-Auen National Park. Cycle along peaceful riverside paths surrounded by wetlands, forests, and abundant wildlife. Passing the historic castles of Orth and Eckartsau, you continue following the Danube to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, a charming spa town known for its fascinating Roman heritage.

Challenge: 40 km / 24.8 mi

Day 3:    Bad German Altenburg to Bratislava (25 km / 15.5 mi)

Following the Danube Cycle Path, ride between the Hainburg Mountains and the Little Carpathians as you make your way to Bratislava. Slovakia’s charming capital welcomes you with its historic old town, elegant architecture, lively squares, and cosy cafés. It is one of the most memorable highlights of the entire route.

Challenge: 25 km / 15.5 mi

Day 4:    Bratislava via Schüttinsel to Györ (80 km/ 49 mi or 50 km / 31 mi + train)

Cycle through the beautiful Schüttinsel, a tranquil region of Danube branches, rich birdlife, and traditional rural villages. The route continues towards Győr, one of Hungary’s most attractive cities, famous for its Baroque old town and location at the meeting point of three rivers. To enjoy a more relaxed stage, you can take the train from Mosonmagyaróvár to Győr (train tickets are available on site at the station at ticket machines), reducing the cycling distance to approximately 45 km while still experiencing the highlights of the day.

Challenge: 80 or 50 km / 49 or 31 mi

Day 5:    From Györ to the Komarno region (55 km / 34.2 mi)

Today’s route takes you to the renowned Bábolna National Stud Farm, famous for its magnificent Arabian horses. From here, cycle through scenic rolling countryside and peaceful farmland landscapes as you return to the banks of the Danube. Your day ends in Komárno, a historic border town known for its impressive fortress and rich cultural heritage.

Challenge: 55 km / 34.2 mi

Day 6:     From Komarno region to the Danube Bend (50 km / 31 mi)

Cycling through charming rural villages and peaceful countryside. Along the way, pass the fascinating Roman fort of Kelemantia, one of the region’s most important archaeological sites. Your destination is Esztergom, Hungary’s former royal capital, home to the magnificent Esztergom Basilica, the largest church in the country and a true highlight of the journey.

Challenge: 50 km / 31 mi

Day 7:    From Danube Bend to Budapest (70 km / 43.5 mi)

Experience the spectacular Danube Bend, one of the most beautiful stretches of the river. Cycle across Szentendre Island, passing peaceful villages before reaching Szentendre, a charming artists’ town renowned for its galleries, museums, and colourful streets.

To complete the journey, continue to Budapest by boat during the navigation season, enjoying unique views of the Danube, or by train outside the boat season. The boat transfer may take place at the beginning or end of the stage depending on the timetable and season. Your tour finishes in Budapest, one of Europe's most impressive capitals.

Challenge: 70 km / 43.5 mi

Day 8:    Departure from Budapest

Your unforgettable cycling adventure along the Danube comes to an end after breakfast in the magnificent city of Budapest.

Difficulty & Terrain

The Danube Cycle Path is one of Europe's easiest long-distance cycling routes. The route follows dedicated cycle paths and quiet riverside roads, with mostly flat terrain and only a few gentle inclines. Daily stages range from approximately 25 to 70 km and can be made even easier with an e-bike.
