This is a four-day holiday based at a cyclist-friendly hotel in Amsterdam. You will stay three nights in Amsterdam and have two full days at your disposal for cycling. We have devised four routes for you to choose from, so you can decide for yourself where you would like to go: the fishing village of Volendam and cheese town Edam; the world-famous windmills at Zaanse Schans; Muiderslot Castle; or the elegant city of Haarlem. When planning your journey to Amsterdam, do try to arrive early and depart late in the day so you can make the most of days 1 and 4 and possibly go for a spin then too. This could also be the ideal holiday for those groups with conflicting priorities, like when the gentlemen prefer a long cycling trip whereas the ladies have their hearts set on Van Gogh. Meet up again in the evening over a bowl of stamppot to discuss your day.

If you arrive early, you could fit in one of our shorter cycle routes or just explore the different neighbourhoods of Amsterdam by bike (watch out for trams!), by public transport or on foot. There are fun shopping streets, museums, squares to while away your time, restaurants… enough to fill your day.
Choose one of our four routes. For example the route to Marken, Volendam and Edam on the coast of what used to be Zuiderzee sea. The former two are old fishing villages; the latter shipped out salty, round, polder cheeses to the rest of the world. The 75-km route takes you through picture-postcard scenery.
Or choose a shorter loop and cycle to the elegant city of Haarlem and back in 47 kilometers.
Choose another of our four routes. The route to Muiden Castle is 63 km long. We have a bit of a military theme going here. The town of Naarden is a good example of a star-shaped fortification (have a peek on google maps!). It’s very well preserved, complete with walls and a moat. Next up is the village of Muiden, at the mouth of the River Vecht. Although very picturesque in itself, it is best known for its small moated castle built around 1280 - well worth a visit!
The last of our four routes takes you to Zaandam and back in 47 fascinating kilometers. The area around the River Zaan was very early to industrialize thanks to wind power. Hundreds of sawmills, for example, contributed in a big way to the building of the enormous shipping fleet that brought Amsterdam prosperity. This is a fantastic route for those interested in industrial heritage! In addition to quaint old factories and warehouses lining the river, look forward to the beautiful windmills at Zaanse Schans that continue to produce mustard, paint and oil to this day. Check out the many home movies on youtube for a foretaste of Zaanse Schans. As the sun sets, back in Amsterdam, you could go for a leisurely stroll through the romantic canal district.
After breakfast, it’s time to pack your bags. There are big lockers at the train station where you can leave your luggage to continue your explorations for another couple of hours, perhaps.

Our premium bikes are lightweight and make excellent touring bikes with 27-gears and disc brakes. The bikes are less heavy than our hybrid bikes: they weigh +/- 15 KG. We have both men- and women style premium bikes, which will be assigned according to gender. Our premium bikes have normal pedals. Most of our premium bikes are Koga Grand Tourer bikes or similar. Premium bikes are always on request.
Two of our mostly used race bikes are Montreal 74 Eddy Merckx and Blockhaus 67 Eddy Merckx, both unisex. The bikes are made from aluminium.
For children who are at least 125 cm, we can also arrange bikes (these are 24”or 26” for children that are bigger than 140 cm)
Tandem bikes are suitable for two adults only. The tandem bikes have a frame size of 48 cm. We mostly use the Victoria Spezial 8.7. This tandem bike comes with 24-derailleur gears or nuvinci gears. The height of the handle bars on a tandem bike cannot be adjusted.
E-bikes are always on request, as we have a limited amount of e-bikes available. Our e-bikes are unisex, have handbrakes and have ten gears. Our smallest e-bike has a frame size of 49 cm and is suitable for persons that are 155 cm (5ft1) or taller.
GPS tracks are available on request.
The bikes were excellent quality and the S-cape routes were all enjoyable. Amsterdam and surrounding towns visited were easy to get to, very scenic and very cycle friendly. The accommodation was good and conveniently located for the cycle routes. We have done 3 S-Cape vacations and would definitely recommend them.
