Welcome, traveller, to a new adventure!
Although many associate winter with staying indoors under a blanket with a hot chocolate, the reality is that this season is perfect for discovering unique places without getting cold. There are great destinations where you can enjoy nature while hiking or cycling, and the best part is that, being low season, you'll have these paradises almost to yourself. In this blog I'm going to tell you about some of the best winter destinations, where you can explore at your own pace and without the typical summer crowds.
The Canary Islands
While the rest of the country bundles up in scarves and coats, in the Canary Islands you can walk around in short sleeves, relax on golden or black sand beaches, and enjoy a spring-like climate almost all year round. From sunbathing by the sea to hiking routes through volcanic landscapes and lush forests, the Canary Islands have a unique contrast of landscapes that make them ideal for those looking for a winter getaway with a difference. What's more, their mild temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities, whether it's a day at the beach or a nature trail.
Tenerife has its spectacular Teide, the highest peak in Spain, with incredible views and hiking routes for all levels. Gran Canaria is full of varied landscapes, from beaches to mountains and impressive ravines. Then there are quieter islands, such as La Palma and La Gomera, perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle and getting lost in super-green trails, ravines and viewpoints that look like something out of a film. On La Gomera, you can also discover the mysterious Garajonay forest, a World Heritage Site, and one of the best places to breathe fresh air and enjoy the peace and quiet.
The best thing about this time of year is that, as it is low season, you can enjoy any of these islands without the stress and crowds. Forget about long queues or crowded beaches: winter in the Canary Islands lets you enjoy at your own pace, with all the peace and quiet you need to disconnect.
So if this winter you fancy sun, nature and adventure, the Canary Islands are waiting for you.
Andalusia and Murcia
Although the cold can grip many parts of the country in winter, the south also offers pleasant temperatures and has a special charm that makes it a great destination for those seeking outdoor adventure. If you love hiking or cycling, both Andalusia and Murcia have spectacular scenery and routes without the crowds of the high season.
Walking along nature trails in the south of Spain in winter is a real treat. You can enjoy hiking routes that take you through snow-capped mountains, verdant forests and fairytale landscapes, or take your bike and ride along those cool trails that take you through valleys and along the coast.
From the villages of the Alpujarras and the volcanic landscapes of Andalucía's Cabo de Gata , to the most beautiful routes in Murcia that combine mountains and coastline, southern Spain has it all. You can cycle along quiet roads, hike routes that take you past spectacular views, or set off to explore coastal paths with the sea as a backdrop.
And at the end of your day, you can relax, enjoy the rich local gastronomy, savour a variety of traditional dishes and discover the history and culture of the region with its atmospheric surroundings.
For a winter getaway full of sun, nature and culture, southern Spain is great.
Portugal
Another ideal destination that combines nature, adventure and relaxation is Portugal. This country offers landscapes that will leave you open-mouthed and which you can explore on foot. Its impressive beaches and cliffs, its paths between dunes and hidden coves, or the Atlantic coast will surprise you.
If you want something more exotic, you have, for example, the island of Madeira, awarded as the World's Best Island in 2022, where you can walk along the famous levadas between laurel forests and tropical flowers.
And after a day's walking, there's no better way to relax than in one of the beautiful and cosy rural lodges found throughout the country. Don't forget the delicious local food and wine. Every meal is a feast of traditional Portuguese flavours, always in the company of local hospitality.
If you are looking for a hiking experience that allows you to unwind, surrounded by exotic landscapes that combine sea, mountains and forests, Portugal has it all.
Without a doubt, any of these destinations offer ideal winter holidays to enjoy alone or in a group. They are perfect destinations to make those months more bearable when the weather makes the weather longer. These getaways will help you get through the winter in a lighter way.
