This 8-day Asturian coastline cycling holiday invites you to experience the rhythm of life along Spain’s Green Coast, cycling at your own pace from Llanes to Gijón. Ride through rolling countryside where cows graze on clifftops above the Atlantic, pass quiet beaches and traditional fishing villages, and end your days enjoying authentic Asturian cuisine—complete with a glass of the region’s iconic natural cider.
Start: Villanueva de Colombres Finish: Gijón
Travel to Green Spain and arrive in Villanueva near Colombres, home to the inspiring bright-blue Emigration Museum at Quinta de Guadalupe, a classic ‘Casona de Indiano’ colonial-style mansión. Relax in peaceful rural surroundings and begin to enjoy lovely ‘España Verde’.
Start off with a splendid 43 km / 27 mi circular route through hilly terrain on the border between Cantabria and Asturias. Save time at the end for an optional detour to the beach at Pechón, cycle to Cueva del Pindal with its prehistoric cave paintings or ride to Romanesque ruins at Santa Tina Church.
Challenge: 43 km / 27 mi, 900 m ascent and descent
OR: 27 km / 17 mi, 580 m ascent and descent
Embark on a quiet ride further into the province of Asturias, as you traverse La Borbolla in the ‘dark valley’ (Valle Oscuro) then ride out toward the sea and pick up the ‘Senda Costera’ cycling route. Pause for pictures or a paddle at quiet beaches along the way. Your day ends in the colourful little port town of Llanes, where you take a stroll along medieval lanes and select a restaurant for dinner.
Challenge: 25.5 km / 16 mi, 325 m ascent and descent
Today's route cuts through green hills to reach Nueva de Llanes, passing enticing beaches where you can stop for a swim. Pause in Porrúa to see the ethnographic museum and snap a few photos of the church in Niembro. The market village of Posada boasts a centuries-long tradition and here you make a choice between the standard route on the northern variant of St James’ Way (Camino del Norte) and the alternative route involving a steep ascent inland. Both options end at your next accommodation, situated in Nueva de Llanes. For this afternoon, it’s just 4 km from your hotel to the striking beach at Cuevas del Mar.
Challenge: 25 - 28 km / 15.5 mi - 17.5 mi, 300 / 500 m ascent and descent
Cruise the coast going west on the Camino de Santiago as blue and yellow painted shells mark the ancient route. Once you’ve settled in at your hotel in Colunga, there will still be time to visit the Jurassic Museum before dinner. A good way to work up an appetite, since getting there means extra cycling with extra ascent.
Challenge: 42 km / 26 mi, 680 m ascent, 800 m descent
Villaviciosa’s inviting town centre was once an important stop for pilgrims going to Santiago, nowadays it’s at the heart of cider production in Asturias. Pause to taste a tapa made with ‘sidra’ then cycle the estuary through an EU special protection area for birds (SPA). Trundle onward to the tiny port of Tazones, known for its fresh seafood and the accidental 1517 anchoring of Emperor Charles V.
Challenge: 36 km / 22.5 mi, 600 m ascent, 480 m descent
Your last route will be slightly shorter though it begins with quite a good ascent. Climbing up through lush greenery, you’ll view the Asturian countryside from an elevation of 220 m then sail down into Gijón, gliding along San Lorenzo Beach boardwalk all the way to your hotel. Celebrate this evening as you dine on local cuisine in the welcoming city centre.
Challenge: 32 km / 20 mi, 460 m ascent, 600 m descent
Your cycling trip comes to an end this morning after breakfast. Departure from Asturias or extra nights to explore Gijón or the nearby capital of Asturias, Oviedo, and its splendid Gothic cathedral.

How to get to Villanueva de Colombres
The nearest airports are Asturias-Oviedo (OVD), Santander (SDR) and Bilbao (BIO).
If flying into Asturias Airport (OVD), take the airport shuttle to Oviedo bus station and then a bus to Unquera (timetables: www.alsa.es). From Unquera, a short taxi ride (4 km) will take you to Villanueva de Colombres or Vilde.
If arriving at Santander (SDR) or Bilbao (BIO) airports, regular buses connect both cities with Unquera. From there, continue by taxi to Villanueva de Colombres or Vilde.
We recommend booking bus tickets and taxi transfers in advance, particularly during summer and weekends.
Departure from Gijón
Gijón has regular bus connections to Asturias (OVD), Santander (SDR) and Bilbao (BIO) airports. For timetables and bookings, visit www.alsa.es.
S-Cape Travel can also arrange private transfers to and from the airports at the start or end of your trip. Find the options at the time of booking or reach us out!
Where is the Llanes coastline?
The Llanes coastline is located in eastern Asturias, on Spain’s northern coast, between the Picos de Europa mountains and the Cantabrian Sea. Renowned for its dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, green pastures, and picturesque fishing villages, it is one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in northern Spain.
When to go?
This trip is available between April and October. Spring and autumn are ideal for cycling, with mild temperatures, green landscapes and generally quiet roads.
July and August are the busiest months, especially in coastal areas and popular towns, as many Spaniards travel north to escape the summer heat. While this brings a lively atmosphere, with local festivals and cultural events, roads, beaches and villages can be considerably busier. For a more peaceful cycling experience, we recommend travelling outside the peak summer season.
Travelling by car
If you are travelling in your own vehicle, you can leave it parked at the accommodation in Vilde for the duration of the trip. If you have booked the upgraded accommodation option in Villanueva de Colombres, unguarded public parking is available nearby.
Your hotel in Gijón has an arrangement with a nearby city car park, if you prefer a guarded parking space. Contact us for further information.

What gear do I need?
The routes follow quiet country roads and cycling paths, making a hybrid or gravel bike an excellent choice.
Keep in mind that Asturias is famous for its lush green landscapes, which are the result of frequent rainfall. We therefore recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and a spare pair of shoes. On sunny days, some sections of the route offer little shade, so sun protection—such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen—is also essential from June to September.
Although the routes pass through small villages, some have limited or no services, so on certain days you’ll need to carry snacks and water with you.
Difficulty & Terrain
Daily distances range from 25 to 43 km (16–27 miles), mostly on quiet country roads. The terrain is hilly, with regular ascents and descents throughout the week and daily elevation gains of 300–900 m. While none of the climbs are particularly long or technical, some days can be physically demanding, especially on a standard bike. An e-bike is a great option if you prefer a more relaxed ride and more time to enjoy the beaches, villages, and scenery along the way.
How to Book & Our Terms
When you make a booking, we first check availability and do our best to confirm all your chosen options. Once everything is confirmed, we’ll contact you. If something isn’t available, we’ll get in touch to discuss alternative options with you.
You can note any preferences or questions in the comments box at the final step of booking. For full details, please see our Terms & Conditions and How to book pages.
