Start: Burgos Finish: León
The stages for this trip have been selected after careful consideration of the terrain, relief, possible dangers due to physical barriers, type of surface and availability of nearby accommodation with accessible facilities. However, there are inevitably certain critical spots where wheelchair users will need the help of their companion. There are also certain road crossings and short sections along road shoulders, which cannot be avoided if one wishes to do the longer stretches of the ‘Camino’.
Having done the check-in in your hotel, you can spend the afternoon visiting Burgos, with a pedestrian old quarter and a very nice promenade along Arlanzón River. This city boasts visitors with very nice restaurants to get in touch with the tasty gastronomy of Castilla y León. Tonight’s dinner is not included in the package, but you can arrange it yourself directly with the hotel or choose one of the accessible restaurants we suggest for people with reduced mobility.
After breakfast, an adapted taxi will take you to the beginning of the route in Itero de la Vega, where the rental bike for the companion will also be delivered. This is the first village of Palencia province, in the region of Tierra de Campos, with vast plains and slight ruggedness among crop fields. After 8 km you reach Boadilla del Camino, an easy stretch with a short but well worth it ascent to get beautiful views over Boadilla and its church (Iglesia de la Asunción) and pillory (15th century).
The second section until Frómista (6km) goes along the Canal de Castile on a compact dirt path. In the afternoon, you will have time to visit some architectonic jewels, belonging to the Romantic period.
Again, dinner is not included tonight, but you can have it next to the accommodation, in a carvery.
Villages: Itero de la Vega - Boadilla del Camino - Frómista
Today’s stage goes along an easy path parallel to the main road P-980, with scarce slopes. Endless crop fields will accompany you along the way.
Don’t miss Santa María la Blanca’s Church in Villalcázar de Sirga. Until Carrión de los Condes, the end of today’s route, you follow the same path for other 6 km. This village has around 2000 inhabitants and offers all kinds of services and interest points such as Sta. María de la Victoria’s Church, Santiago’s Church and The Monastery of San Zoilo.
Villages: Frómista - Población de Campos - Revenga de Campos - Villovieco - Villarmentero de Campos - Villalcázar de Sirga - Carrión de los Condes
An adapted taxi will take you this morning, with your handbike and rental bike, to the beginning of the route by the Roman path Vía Aquitana. This stage is quite easy, flat and straight until Calzadilla de la Cueza, following a compact dirt / gravel track. On the way, you go past Calzadilla de la Cueza, a typical western scenery. Its houses were built along an ancient Roman path which is now part of the Camino de Santiago. In Calzadilla you will also spot some dovecotes, typical from this area. After other 13 km you will reach the end of today’s route, in Moratinos.
Villages: Calzadilla de la Cueza - Lédigos - Terradillos de los Templarios - Moratinos
Today you enter theso-called Páramo Leonés, on a dirt track with no slopes.
You will go past the villages of Moratinos and San Nicolás del Real Camino. Before Sahagún there is diversion to avoid the tricky entrance to Ermita de la Virgen del Puente (Mudejar & Romanesque styles), with the historic churches of San Lorenzo & San Tirso.
The rest of the way to Bercianos del Camino Real (about 10 km) is easy along a road with little traffic. As an option, this section can be done on a dirt path suitable for the handbike, with loose stones and at a lower speed.
Villages: Moratinos-San Nicolás del Real Camino-Sahagún- Calzada del Coto-Bercianos del Camino Real.
Today’s stage goes through the Páramo, among plains and vast crop fields. The route is easy on a dirt track with loose stones, but it does not imply any problem for the handbike. It can also be done along a tarmac road with little traffic.
Villages: Bercianos del Camino Real - El Burgo de Ranero- Reliegos - Mansilla de las Mulas
After breakfast, a taxi will take you direct to your hotel in León. After checking-in: visit the most important monuments of the city such as its Santa María’s Cathedral (12th-13th centuries), of Gothic style and with a magnificent stained glass window, or the Basílica of San Isidoro. Art lovers can also visit the Contemporary Art Museum (MUSAC). But if there is something León is well-known for that is its old quarter or Barrio Húmedo, full of tapas bars. Stroll around San Martín Square and Ancha, de la Rúa, Badillo and Las Cercas streets.
