Win an 8 day cycling adventure on the Camino Primitivo worth over £1000

S-Cape Travel have been hand-crafting self-guided walking and cycling holidays for over 25 years. From our 6 offices across Europe, our experts design trips so you can immerse yourself in our local cultures and explore the hidden corners of Europe at your own pace.

With an office in the heart of Asturias in Northern Spain, we’re uniquely placed as the experts of the Camino Primitivo, the original pilgrimage route to Santiago.

The Camino Primitivo is the original pilgrimage route to Santiago, taking you through the glorious deep-green hills of Asturias and Galicia, cycling a path that’s definitely less travelled. Incredible views combine with small, characterful towns, filled with welcoming locals and delicious local specialities.

In the 9th century King Alphonse II decided to see with his own eyes the bones of apostle St. James. With that purpose he journeyed through dark woods and daunting mountains, from the capital of his kingdom - Oviedo - to a remote area of what is now Galicia. This cycle tour follows this authentic route, traversing part of the ‘España Verde’, through the varied countryside of Asturias and Galicia. His pilgrimage was done following Roman stone ways, countryside paths and traditional faming or trading routes, so it mostly runs along dirt tracks, paths and some local minor roads. As you cycle along this historical trail, you will get a taste of the special atmosphere that surrounds the pilgrims who follow the Camino de Santiago, or Saint James’ Way, in any of its versions.  You will go past many of the most important highlights and you will be able to learn about the history and tradition around this pilgrimage trail

All our hotels along the way are picked because of their location, atmosphere and friendly service. You’ll stay in 16th century palaces, enjoy locally famous restaurants offering traditional homemade cuisine, cosy spots next to the walls of medieval towns, and, if you have the energy, one hotel sports a lovely pool to ease those post-cycling muscles.

Camino

You will have to option to follow the mountain trails from the Original Way (more challenging and appropriate for MTB) or also take alternative routes on tarmac, parallel to the trail.

Highlights:

  • Challenging cycling through the gorgeous landscapes of Asturias and Galicia
  • Old trails, Medieval villages and traditional architecture
  • Welcoming locals and excellent gastronomy
  • Charming accommodations in rural areas or historical settings
  • Mountainous terrain, dense forests, green pastures and exciting mountain passes
  • Oviedo, Lugo and Santiago; three cities with a great historical legacy
  • Option of renting electric bikes: MTB or hybrid!

Statistics for the trail

350 km in 6 days, with some days having over 2000m of ascent over mountain passes if you take the challenge route. For the challenge route you’ll be covering over 6500m of ascent during the week, for the trekking bike route  a bit less. Don’t worry, e-bikes are available to rent, but if you like a proper cycling challenge, this is the route to tackle!
