ROUTE

The rides follow mostly well asphalted country roads and secondary roads. There are some dirt-road cycle paths around Pisa and Lucca. There are some small hills on the way to Vinci. Near larger towns, the roads have more traffic.

Day 1: Arrival in Pisa
Day 2: Pisa loop to the Certosa of Calci (25 km / 15,5 mi)
Day 3: Cycle from Pisa to Lucca (24 km / 15 mi)
Day 4: Loop tour of Lucca’s villas (33 - 39 km / 20,5 - 24 mi)
Day 5: Cycle from Lucca to Vinci (29 - 54 km / 18 - 33,5 mi)
Day 6: Vinci round trip (8 -15 km / 5 - 9,5 mi)
Day 7: Day trip tp Florence or bike ride to Cerreto Guidi (15 km / 9,5 mi)

Day 1:    Arrival in Pisa

Arrive at your hotel in San Giuliano Terme, located 3,5 km from Pisa centre town, and settle in to the comfortable 3* hotel with swimming pool. 

 

Day 2:    Pisa loop to the Certosa of Calci (25 km / 15,5 mi)

Begin your day cycling through the inspiring countryside around Pisa, stopping for a visit to the grandiose Certosa of Calci monastery. It was founded in 1366 and houses a magnificent, renowned Natural History Museum. The second part of the day is spent in Pisa, visiting its many outstanding monuments

Challenge: 2 hours, 25 km / 15,5 mi, 90m ascent, 90m descent

Day 3:    Cycle from Pisa to Lucca (24 km / 15 mi)

Today’s ride is very scenic and nearly all flat. The route follows the Serchio River to reach the charming town of Lucca. Once in Lucca, take your time to visit the wonderful city centre, ride along the imposing tree-lined perimeter walls and explore its splendid gardens, majestic bell tower and impressive Piazza Anfiteatro, a 2nd century Roman amphitheatre.

Challenge: 2 hours, 24 km / 15 mi, 300m ascent, 295m descent

Day 4:    Loop tour of Lucca’s villas (33 - 39 km / 20,5 - 24 mi)

Today you cycle upstream along the Serchio River cycle path that takes you to the Lucchese foothills where there are many beautiful and famous palaces and gardens to be visited. Stop to admire the monumental gardens full of luxurious and extraordinary vegetation of Villa Reale and Villa Grabau before heading back towards town. 

Challenge: 2.5/3.5 hours, 33 - 39 km / 20,5 - 24 mi, 170/450m ascent, 170/450m descent

Day 5:    Cycle from Lucca to Vinci (29 - 54 km / 18 - 33,5 mi)

Today you with your bikes and luggage will be transferred to Altopascio where you start the ride through the Padule of Fucecchio nature reserve. This is one of the largest inland wetlands of Europe. Depending on the time of year the area will be wet or dry. Marvel at the delightful all-encompassing greenness and to spot some migratory birds enjoying a well-deserved rest on their way south why not leave the road and head into the vegetation. 

The day ride ends at a farm in the outskirts of the village of Vinci, where the famous inventor/artists Leonardo da Vinci came from. 

Challenge: 3/4 hours, 29 - 54 km / 18 - 33,5 mi, 250/270m ascent, 250/270m descent

Day 6:    Vinci round trip (8 -15 km / 5 - 9,5 mi)

Gain insight on the genius of Leonardo da Vinci as you explore his birthplace and the two remarkable, child friendly and hands on museums dedicated to his inventions. Admire his original designs and inventions and ride up to the house where he was born, for some spectacular views and quintessential Tuscan scenery. 

Challenge: 1/2 hours, 8/15 km, 175/450m ascent, 175/450m descent

 

Day 7:    Day trip tp Florence or bike ride to Cerreto Guidi (15 km / 9,5 mi)

Today you can chose to either do a round tour in the vicinity of Vinci, going to the village of Cerreto Guide, with its imposing Medici palace/Villa or you can cycle into Empoli from where a 30 minute train ride takes you into downtown Florence the cradle of the Renaissance. Spend the day strolling its wonderful streets and admiring the innumerable wonders before returning to Empoli the afternoon and cycling back to Vinci Overnight in Vinci

Challenge: 2.5 hours, 15 km / 9,5 mi, 450m ascent, 450m descent

 

Day 8:    Arrivederci Toscana

After breakfast you will be driven to Empoli railway station, from where you can take the traFlorence or Pisa. If you have rented a bike with us, leave it at the accommodation in Vinci.

You can start on any day of the week, subject to availability, between March and November.

Florence (FLR)Pisa (PSA) and Bologna (BLQ) airports are flown to by both major and low cost international carriers. All three airports can be easily reached by local transport, which is affordable and offers a frequent service.

Arrival in San Giuliano Terme

From any airport, you can easily get to the closest railway station. From Pisa Centrale, trains are direct to San Giuliano Terme (Pisa). From Florence, you need to change in Pisa Centrale. From Bologna, you need to change in Florence and Pisa Centrale.

Departure from Vinci

You need to reach Empoli from Vinci by bus. From Empoli train station, you can reach Florence and Pisa by direct train.

RENTAL BIKES

IMPORTANT: when booking a junior bike, a trailer bike or a bike trailer, bike supplier MUST know the size of frame and wheel clients use at home and also which bike (mum's or dad's) the bike trailer or trailer bike should be linked to. Rear bags are not possible for junior bikes
